Many beings recently have had growing concerns and questions regarding the topic of Biomechanics. Generally, the field of Biomechanics is generally not talked about often and is usually hushed away from the common folk as various shady and ethically concerning experiments have been done. Typically, most beings are exposed to the aftermath of the experiments and are usually unaware due to their perception as living beings. Regardless, I will finally reveal what it all means.
First, let us define the terms mechanical, living, and biomechanical because these can be confusing for some people. The term mechanical refers to inanimate objects which do not possess a soul. Living beings however do possess a soul. Not only that but a living being must also have some means of modifying the soul that resides within it. These two factors are what clearly distinguishes the living from the mechanical. Biomechanical mainly refers to a being who is normally supposed to be only mechanical by nature but has been endowed with a soul and becomes a proper living being by a supernatural process. This supernatural process could have violated the natural laws and causality of that specific universe if natural laws wouldn't have normally allowed it.
Yes, this means things like rocks, water, and air can be considered "mechanical" despite the word typically being used for objects which are machine-like in nature. I will continue using these terms as they are traditional in the field of Biomechanics but if they bother you, then you can mentally replace mechanical with inanimate, living with animate, and keep biomechanical as is.
Souls are basically the culmination of a living being's experiences of reality or the universe. These typically can include thoughts, knowledge, memory, emotions, senses, and etc.
Souls actually do not have any actual physical or measurable boundary. The soul can be viewed as expanding indefinitely at least until it hits a boundary of some kind. Souls can be bounded to physical objects or beings. Boundaries are dictated by atoms and any neighboring atoms. Basically if the atoms are close enough, then the soul will treat the group of atoms as being part of the same physical object/being and will "expand" itself to that portion. This is the explanation for why the soul doesn't leave your body when you are in contact with something. It's mainly because are you weren't in enough contact.
Souls can be split into an infinite amount of divisions. Typically soul splitting happens due to decay/breaking of the physical object/being for whatever reason. A copy of the soul is then imparted and is taken away to that split portion. Also, souls exist in a unique plane of existence which acts parallel to the main one. Some people refer to this as the "World of Spirits" or some other similar names.
Living beings thus act as the main conduit for soul manipulation. They function very similarly to how one can write or overwrite information on a disk. When a living being is born or created, the collective soul is either drawn from the World of Spirits or a soul split is imparted from another object/being.
Then, living beings as they live, will be manipulating their soul information constantly based off of the physical and bodily processes they possess. The nerves and the brain are the main body parts which facilitates this function. Simply put, nerves record information from the external environment and the brain puts those thoughts into the soul. Thus your current causal state is essentially what your soul is right now and it is always ever changing.
I should really stress how strongly the physical component can affect the soul. Let's say you put a human's soul inside a rock. Some may assume that this poor human is probably freaking out and screaming that they are stuck in a rock or something. This is not true. This is because the rock lacks the means to manipulate souls which would normally manifest as sapience. Thus, the soul is untampered and unchanged. Think of this scenario as freezing the state your mind was in and then having it be held in a rock. If we put the soul back in you, your memory would resume as normal and you wouldn't be cognizant of any new events which have occurred until you found out. You would still have been angry if you were angry or whatever state of mind you had.
This also brings up the topic of ghosts and why they haunt people or do repetitive actions. Ghosts are essentially minimalist biomachines that contain only the means to express consciousnesses but not to overwrite the soul. Thus if a being died angry, then their ghost will express infinite wrath upon those with no end. No one is fully sure how ghosts come to form, but the composition of ghosts could suggest that a specific loosely connected mass of substance which allows for life, which can give potential hints for how abiogenesis had first occurred.
Now what if we put a human soul into a cat? The cat is a living being so there has to be some cool talking cat with a human brain kind of thing right? This is also not true. Since human and cat brains function differently, the very moment you attempt to place a human soul into a cat, then the cat's brain and its biochemistry will immediately modify the soul to think as the cat would think. It would not start talking like a human because the cat lacks the mental conscience to speak. You essentially destroy (or more accurately convert) the original personality. Think about how converting to different file types function. Sometimes quality degradation can happen or things become corrupted if you force data into places it shouldn't be. The cat could however hold memories of seeing colors beyond its normal color range much like how a person who has gone blind can still recall colors mentally.

Basically, as long as the living being can properly recreate the information due to having the appropriate means to, then it can properly preserve the information. Otherwise, the information may change due to physical differences. This 100% is considered impossible and ideal. You can get very close to it but there will always be minute variations which can modify things in various ways.

The study of Biomechanics has led to many inventions and products as you can imagine. Most prominently, the Biomachine Industry is one of the greatest and lucrative ones out there.
Biomachines (also called Soul Machines or God Machines) are incredibly powerful machines that easily surpass normal machines in terms of information capacity and complexity of information organization and optimization. This is mainly done first via heavy genetic manipulation in order to modify the behavior and way how the being will manipulate the soul data. By manipulating the being, one can precisely modify how the soul is drawn from the World of Spirits, how the soul data is organized, how it can be accessed, how it is manipulated, and so on.
On the whole, this can be used to make simple machines such as...
a thermometer (a biomachine that detects heat and gives out information concerning that),
a partially sentient auto tasker (basically a biomachine that is able to contextually understand what repetitive task you are doing which allow it to do or organize stuff for you in a certain way),
a computation dump (a biomachine that is able to hold code and information and have it be organized in a certain way),
biomachine translator (basically a translator that has the mind of a being who can comprehend the abstraction of language and is only focused on said aspect)
And really, a myriad of more products. Basically, imagine whatever machine or living being exists in your world right now. That can be remade. And then imagine combining any of the aspects between machine and living beings. That can also be made. Thus, the possibilities are just about infinite in terms of usage.
