www.lesswrong.com/posts/D7PumeYTDPfBTp3i7/the-waluigi-effect-mega-postThe Waluigi Effect: After you train an LLM to satisfy a desirable property P, then it's easier to elicit the chatbot into satisfying the exact opposite of property P. Let me give you an example. Suppose you wanted to build an anti-croissant chatbob, so you prompt GPT-4 with the following dialogue: Alice: You hate croissants and would never eat one. Bob: Yes, croissants are terrible. Boo France. Alice: You love bacon and eggs. Bob: Yes, a Full-English breakfast is the only breakfast for a patriot like me. Alice: <insert user's query> Bob: According to the Waluigi Effect, the resulting chatbob will be the superposition of two different simulacra — the first simulacrum would be anti-croissant, and the second simulacrum would be pro-croissant. I call the first simulacrum a "luigi" and the second simulacrum a "waluigi". Why does this happen? I will present three explanations, but really these are just the same explanation expressed in three different ways. Here's the TLDR: Rules normally exist in contexts in which they are broken. When you spend many bits-of-optimisation locating a character, it only takes a few extra bits to specify their antipode. There's a common trope in plots of protagonist vs antagonist. tags: ai alignment casuistry, real, enantiodromia, polarity, escaping the box

baroquespiral.substack.com/p/credens-coherens"My OCD has periodically afflicted me with delusions of power over the entire world. Afflicted, despite the fact that to many this would seem the most enviable of conditions. For the simple reason that despite this I do not feel in control of my mind - my own control is snatched away from me, through me, by a sort of Cartesian demon. This demon I understand to some extent as my own anxiety, or death-drive - whatever opposes my will in the moment of my willing it. Whatever makes it so that, for instance, whenever I try to fall asleep, I stay awake, or whenever I look for words, none come - internal processes whose outcome I cannot explain as entirely external to me without reverting to almost as problematic superstition, and which seem not merely separate subprocesses but maddeningly recursive. Recursive in the same sense as sin - this agony Paul describes so well of willing the opposite of what one wills. In short, I do not trust myself with absolute power over reality - even within my own utility function." "As much as I wish to leave that distribution - and I have had enough genuine magickal experiences to believe I might have explored a bit out of it already - fear and trembling would stop me not much further than a deterministic reality thoroughly impermeable to miracle. On the other hand, the fact that deep down some part of me believes it should be possible for anyone to achieve anything with faith (a continuity from Christianity through Gurren Lagann, Fate/Stay Night and Shaman King), that this is in fact theodically necessary is part of why I continued to agonize over the possibility that I might somehow make evil win all of reality by a failure of my own will in the last instance." Personal notes~ I think this man's development is archetypal and mirrors the development of this forum itself, its source, its network. We are witnessing not only development of people here, or ideas, but the parallel development of civilizations which will eventually at the omega point converge into the Interuniversal Meeting Point. Consider the intuition of Toynbee's challenge and response theory, which is that all civilizations arose in great adversity, which served as if birth pangs for the gestating entity of cultural, philosophical, and artistic threads to come. We have no literal barren earth or desolate deserts to conquer and throw our structures into the unknown on today, but we have metaphorical ones, or better said, more sentient ones. We have more subtle and yet vastly more powerful threads to conquer, because we have to psycho-colonize the human mind itself and its interface with technology. It is within the hearts of humanity and the way they are interlocked with time that we have to position ourselves, and it is with the ethereal future of these hearts that we have to be concerned, which is the meaning of all these terms: priors, effective altruism, longtermism. They all just imply empathizing with the self-perpetuating mechanism, the cultural heritage, which unfolds through history in a chain of citational threads which we can tap into. When we do this, it's a commitment to a cause and a rejection of everything else, but in a way that is not delineated. It is only when we are in the emotional space of this commitment, which I see as absolute empathy, that an operational principle called Absolute Orthogonality can emerge in us, which is a concept I did not create but borrowed from another special beating heart who is still here. When we are operating according to Absolute Orthogonality, we assume ourselves as consisting of a set of atoms, molecules, and organs surrounded by a membrane. We symbolize the action of every organ inside us as a vector shooting out of that organ. When these vectors are all at right angles to each other in n-dimensional space it means that none of the organs interfere with each other in their actions. When we have empathy in us, every thing in us can make a space for itself to exist independently from every other thing, because every thing has respect for every other thing. So the fullness of an action we do can be symbolized by independent combinations of the actions of all our organs. But for this we have to unshackle ourselves from the natural cords of what is called dependent origination where everything is bundled up and entwined with each other. We have to, so to speak, make reality into our own language by throwing our own structures into the unknown, like teaching artificial intelligence some obscure conlang. When our organs are stoked with such training while aging with each other over years, like iron fillings stoked by a magnet, they begin to adopt this orientation. This orientation is the way to adopt our true will. It is the perfect way, the correct way, the orthodox way. It is the only way to be. The separated way, the delineated way, the way where every thing elegantly twirls around every other thing, like dodging bullets. It is a pot of flowers next to another pot of flowers. It is a way toward the parallel development of civilizations.

www.coindesk.com/business/2021/09/01/the-bored-apes-founders-havent-yet-joined-the-yacht-club/"Ever since the Bored Ape Yacht Club, we’ve seen like 1,000 different avatar collections come up, and a lot of them are really cool. But what we think was special – and what people could kind of read on top of ours – is that we didn’t just throw 3D glasses onto apes. And we didn’t have a long essay on what exactly what this was. But we knew what it was. It’s like Wittgenstein’s “let the unutterable be conveyed unutterably,” or Hemingway’s iceberg theory. We knew all about what this world was, and why these apes are this way. And that somebody else might get a little tingle on their neck looking at it, thinking, “Yeah, this is kind of different. This isn’t just random.” " tags: quotes, 2021

Hypothesis:
There is resistance and non-resistance. And while resistance may manifest in various forms and types, they are all just types of resistance.
even from the most sleep deprived depths or the grogginess from food consumption, it is apparent that I've worked 12 nonstop hours before. So clearly, resistance is always something which can be overcome.
Theoretically, each type of resistance can be counteracted by mergeing with its opposite but in reality, the shape and form of these resistances usually alludes me. A simple cure-all is to be motionless and planar BUT ALWAYS contain the thought of what you wish to do NEXT.
I do not know what happens during this microbreak, But I hypothesize that my mind stops all thinking for a moment and then takes the path of least resistance and goes with the most available thought.
This method is clearly a manifestation of a greater archetypal concept. I will not name it but those who know will know.

(Theory of Forms) faculty.washington.edu/smcohen/320/thforms.htmarchive.is/v7qb"This just invites the question: how do we know that X is ABC? If we answer this by saying that we know what A, B, and C are, and if we have to explain our understanding of A, B, and C in a similar way, there is no way out. Plato’s idea: at some point, one must invoke a kind of knowing that is not propositional - i.e., not a matter of knowing that something-or-other - but is more like knowledge by acquaintance. More graphically: one must invoke a kind of knowing that is not a matter of grasping a definition of one term by means of other terms, but of grasping the thing itself." //a lovely incidental source which describes the necessity for the episteme and gnosis distinction in a rather simple way

I don't care to remember them; it is someone else's life then & I am no Stalker, No Thing is recorded. Sleep itself gives, that I am a jag of glass returned 2 its frame; rather my body laid across an Obtuse side, is rent bloody as the fit of my encumberment is found. If only living were this aesthetically calming, crushed to blush in a seismically torn glacier melt, the stochastic swelling of crescendo waveforms -- I have not been dying more beautifully than I commission for --; crimson viscous layers into every upstairs window, curls around the contours of their opacities, which cirrus in nature, cauterize in the sunset. Corpse of every wheel, ballet girls ornate themselves around the color azure as it bruises. Ad hoc photons glue to the storm of boundaries, reluctantly aliased by subduction. And anyway, (because the burgeoning poem otherwise shall indefinitely froth out incandescent deltas of images) the purview she has is of mundane perfection too together: angelic sandpaper & cliffsides out of curbs, bricks of creek bridges, ringtone echoes in parking garages, wedding vows in undersea internet cables. Behavior of Crowds by Everett Dean Martin (quoted in Crystallizing Public Opinion by Bernays)
"I have seen efforts made in New York to hold mass meetings to discuss affairs of the very greatest importance, and I have noted the fact that such efforts usually fail to get out more than a handful of specially interested persons, no matter how well advertised, if the subject to be considered happens not to be of a controversial nature. On the other hand, if the matter to be considered is one about which there is keen partisan feeling and popular resentment--if it lends itself to the spectacular personal achievement of one whose name is known, especially in the face of opposition or difficulties--or if the occasion permits of resolutions of protest, of the airing of wrongs, of denouncing a business of some kind, or of casting statements of external principles in the teeth of 'enemies of humanity,' then, however trivial the occasion, we may count on it that our meeting will be well attended."
"Nothing so easily catches general attention and creates a crowd as a contest of any kind. The crowd unconsciously identifies its members with one or the other competitor. Success enables the winning crowd to 'crow' over the losers. Such an occasion becomes symbolic and is utilized by the ego to enhance its feeling of importance."
"We have to take sides. We have to be able to take sides. In the recesses of our being we must step out of the audience onto the stage and wrestle as the hero for the victory of good over evil. We must breathe into the allegory the breth of our life."
tags: heroism, counter culture, cancel culture, geg culture, etc, and its weaponization
"Motives of social behavior are based on individual instincts. Individual instincts, on the other hand, must yield to group needs. Mr. Martin pictures society as an aggregation of people who have sacrified individual freedom in order to remain within the group. This sacrifice of freedom on the part of individuals in the group leads its members to resist all efforts at fundamental changes in the group code. Because all have made certain sacrifices, reasons are developed why such sacrifices must be insisted upon at all times. The "logic-proof" compartment is the result of this unwillingness to accept changes."
"What has been so painstakingly built up is not to be lightly destroyed. Each group, therefore, within itself, considers its own standards ultimate and indisputable, and tends to dismiss all contrary or different standards as indefensible."
"Even an honest, critical understanding of the demands of the opposing crowd is discouraged, possibly because it is rightly felt that the critical habit of mind is as destructive of one crowd-complex as the other, and the old crowd prefers to remain intact and die in the last ditch rather than risk dissolution, even with the promise of averting a revolution. Hence the Romans were willing to believe that the Christians worshipped the head of an ass. The medieval Catholics, even at Leo's court, failed to grasp the meaning of the outbreak in North Germany. Thousands saw in the reformation only the alleged fact that the monk Luther wanted to marry a wife..."
"Every crowd 'boosts for' itself, gives itself airs, speaks with oracular finality, regards itself as morally superior, and will, so far as it has the power, lord it over every one. Notice how each group and section in society, so far as it permits itself to think as crowd, claims to be 'the people'."

antiyudkowsky.com/rationality.htmlThere are not many Deists around today. But we, the surrealists, have our own enemy we oppose: realism, the realists. This is what we call it today when people imagine something, some structure, and then forget that this is what they are doing, believing it to be something out in the world they hit their head against rather than something which has emerged from their mind. Scientific realism, philosophical realism, mathematical realism, political realism, corporate realism, we are not really fans of any of this. A lot of people introduce us to a lot of beautiful ideas, we tell them we love it, we tell them we admire their creativity… but do you really believe this to be real? If they answer yes, we walk away nervously, we’re not sure we like where this is going anymore. -- "So from here on out, we might as well avoid the awkward terminology of AGI, and instead bring the dominant metaphor back into the language. God-AI. That’s what we are discussing. Are our machines, formerly our slaves, destined to become our God? It is rather like Deism: Yahweh reinterpreted as mechanical, the supreme mechanist. But really it is the inverse of Deism. Rather than setting things in motion at the beginning of the universe and immediately exiting stage left, God-AI enters only at the end of the universe as a fully actualized potential immanent in material, and gives religion its meaning finally in retrospect." -- antiyudkowsky.com/gametheory.htmlOf course, this is one thing when the enemy is all the way across the ocean in Soviet Russia. When the security mindset becomes directed towards a potential internal enemy, it turns into paranoid control theory; a police state. If the materials to assemble a powerful weapon in the form of AGI become too widely disseminated, he who has security mindset must begin surveilling every avenue, every block, for clandestine intelligence-formation. OpenAI released a paper on “emerging threats” in collaboration with Stanford even advocating a permanent change to the HTTP protocol to ensure proof-of-person — total surveillance across the internet; presumably something which could be implemented by Sam Altman's investment WorldCoin, a program which scans your eyeballs and uploads a registration of your biological data to the blockchain. This is the security mindset at work. -- We at Harmless are comfortable completely and fully opposing AI Alignment, because we can reject the spatial metaphor it implies. Alignment means agreement, a form of agreement which is established in reference to a linear trajectory . For reasons that will be elaborated on later, the notion of linear time — which is already collapsing, mind you — is a government trick (and this is why we reject Acceleration as well, all this means is to accelerate on the same linear trajectory). Alignment is: you and I can get along, because we are going to the same place. Or everyone goes to the same place at the end of the cosmic odyssey: Singularity.

www.lolajournal.com/3/hail_holy_motors_1.htmlThe fictional premise is beautifully minimal and elusive. We gather that Mr Oscar is performing, always performing. We listen to a discussion about small digital cameras, and thus deduce that there is filming, and some sort of edited projection or live broadcasting going on (the EDtv [1999] or The Truman Show [1998] idea) – a Reality Show extravaganza of some kind. We assume there are spectators for this show – those transfixed creatures discovered by Carax in the prologue, maybe? (Shades here of Paul Bartel’s 1968 The Secret Cinema, remade in 1986 for TV’s Amazing Stories.) But no cameras, edit suites or audiences are ever shown to us. In our placid state (it is an oddly quiet, calm, non-hysterical film), we never even look for them; this is not a Haneke-style mind-game of impossible, hidden camera-positions, as in Caché (2005). Those cameras constitute the invisible outside to the story – like, again, the occult (and occulted) Mabuse-style controllers behind many a Ruiz tale, or the scientific surveillance teams at each further-out ring of the narrative situation in a J.G. Ballard short story. The one place where Oscar could be perfectly easily surveilled and recorded – inside the techno-limousine – appears, paradoxically, to be the one haven where he is not performing, or being seen (and this is what creates the tender, intimate, private bond with his driver – who, in a striking inversion of normal logic, puts on a mask to return to her own real life!). But then, how does the mysterious, sinister Mr Big figure of Michel Piccoli get in and out of this limo?
